Default Cam upgrade for my stock deuce

G'day guys, can any one tell me what are the biggest cams I can put in my 1450 2005 twin cam deuce? I don't know where to start but I DON'T WANT TO REPLACE PUSHRODS, VALVE SPRINGS OR LIFTERS.
any help and advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers Lamy

Andrews 21 or S&S 551. You might not want to replace pushrods, lifters or valve springs; however, if you change cams and find the valve train noisier than stock, adjustable pushrods may be required to take that valve lash out of the valve train; it's a crap shoot. If you have more than 35K miles on the motor, replacing lifters would be a good idea. No worries on the valve springs.

Just a heads up. If you are still running the OEM spring loaded cam tensioners, I would suggest, at a minimum, replacing the tensioner shoes with the CYCO replacement shoes.

You should also replace the inner and outer cam bearings.

As you probably know, to take full advantage of a cam upgrade, if you haven't already upgraded to Stage I with a high flow intake and exhaust, you will not realize the optimum performance of any cam. Additionally, the '05 heads were probably the worst flowing of any of the early models and had, IIRC, the smallest intake valve.

You will also need to re-jet if the bike is carbed or a fuel management system, which in your case, would probably be something like one of the Dobeck TFI units.

Or you can just bolt in the cam and get what you get.

Actually ya could bolt in any cam with stock base circle and under about .510 lift. Problem is big cams like Andrews 50 or even woods 6/S&S 510 really want/need more compression and headflow than your stock 88 has. Ya may actually lose power/ridablity with the biggest cam ya can bolt in. Something like Andrews 26 is a pretty good performance choice in your stock 88 imho.

you shouldn't be looking for the biggest, but should be looking for what will help the most.since your looking for a cam only build, ide use a ANDREWS 48 or S&S 509

Kirby is right about the 48. I don't have any experience with the S&S 509 but I did overlook the 48 which would be a better choice than the 21 or the 26 for a cam only upgrade.

Don't 48s have too much lift for stock '05 heads??

No. '05 was the first year for beehive springs and they will accommodate the .548" lift of the 48s. But don't take my word for it; how about TMan?

The 48s would be a good choice but I still like the 551s as well.

EDIT: Still have to keep in mind that the '05 heads don't flow so well above .400" lift and are pretty much done by .500" lift. So any cam with more than .500" lift and OEM heads doesn't make a lot of sense anyway; just saying.

I also have a 05 deuce ,and have been thinking of just doing the cams . And the Andrew 21's sounded like a good all around cam . But now we're talking about the 48's being better , why ? I do see that they are newer and high lite in red on the Andrews site .
