Question Help! Metal valve stems & tpms caps

Two Questions:

1) Did you take off your rubber stock valve stems and put on the METAL ones? If so do BOTH valve stems stick out the same amount? Or is the METAL valve stem longer or shorter?

2) If you did the above, take off the stock rubber valve stems and replace them with the METAL ones, did you also put on the TPMS valve stem caps on the new metal valve stems??? IF so, did u do that to a touring bike?

Thank you,

When running TPMS on the tires, it is recommended to use metal valve stems as it eliminates centrifical force (flex) ruining the rubber stems.
Correct length on the stems is easy. Same size.

Have TPMS on my '07 Ultra.

I learned the hard way NOT to use rubber stems with the TPMS caps.

I was told the metal valve stems will not work since they are too long. When you try to put the caps on top, they will not fit. There isn't enough room.

I am very glad to hear you say that. So u did not have to get special metal valve stems, u used the regular ones HD has to offer eh?

The indy, where I bought and had the tires mounted, knew what size to use. They were the same length as the stock stems.
I told him, when I had new tires put on, to use metal valve stems.
Wasn't a problem for him at all.

The instructions that were in the box, recommend metal stems.

The indy, do you know if there are different size metal stems?

Measure the length stem you have now.
Go with that same length.
Unless using a tube, the stem just slides into the wheel.
I always get new stems when changing tires but with the metal stem, maybe I don't need to.

GOOD IDEA!!!! If I measure the stem part that is sticking out front and back (I suspect they will be the same), do u know how much of the stem is INSIDE the wheel itself? So when I go to the parts department, I can check the size properly?

Again, thanks for the idea, GOOD thinking!!!!

Getting this project settled in my mind is VERY helpful.

The tire stem has a groove/valley in it to slip securely onto the wheel.
I'm sure you've seen a loose valve stem.
You can see how it fits.

I looked at several metal valve stems on the internet and I did not see the groove u referenced to. Nor any on the road side. No worries.
