Default WG front end?

I have a custom built in 1986 that has most of the parts from an 82 FX... how can I tell what front end is on this thing, I think it is a WG front end but I dont know. How can I tell? Measure the forks? It has a fender that looks like it will only cover 16" wheels, no bigger if that helps

Thanks John! I will take those out today to check mine. I assume you mean the upper forks diameter are 1.630 inches?

Mine are 10" center to center ....and around 2 in diameter on the upper tubes. I guess that means WG? What are the other choices for an FX, Sporty forks?

Were there any other forks on FX's? I understand that the "X" in the FX means that it used the sporty frontend and the FXWG was the same bike with WG forks. Is that the only options for front ends from the factory? Essentially, if my forks measure the same in diameter and width from center to center as a WG, then is is for sure a WG frontend or could it be another model (are WG forks unique)?

maybe coming at this from a different direction might help... what are you trying to do? Just to know, or to figure out the correct accessory you are looking at?

really both. The custom frame has mostly all aftermarket parts bolted to it. The remaining HD parts are hard to pin down. The guy who sold it to me was not the builder and told me that it was an "FX". The tank and dash look like a FXWG or an FLT and so do the forks. Once I figure it out, I am going to assume that all the HD parts came off the same donor bike.

I would like to know because some parts in the catalogs say "except FXWG" for things that seem to me have nothing to do with the wg front end!

I want a tank bib, speedo gear on the front hub, and other things that all fall into this category.

hmmm,

I'd measure my front end for you, but there is a 20 year or so difference, so I don't think it would be useful information.

Maybe starting up a discussion in the Classic or Custom section would be helpful. There might be folks there that can help you out (assuming they are not coming down here... sometimes I think this tech section is the graveyard of this site. Everyone would rather talk about BS)

Thanks, actually I usually post these in the custom or shovel forums...dont know what I was thinking.

I dont need your measurements, the measurements match a WG fork...for now I will have to assume that the donor parts are off an 82 FXWG.
