Default Brakeline life?

I have a 2004 Electraglide. I've heard that brakelines should be replaced every 5 years or so. Anybody have some hard facts on scheduled replacement of brake hoses? Thanks

I had Russel braided s/slines on my 01 for 10 years. Flushed the lines every other year,it's still on the road with a new owner. Cant really say about the oe lines, though.if you're gonna kevthe bike,or for peace of mind, change em.

I haven't heard that and have ridden several bikes way beyond that time. However I have also changed them, especially on my Glide, to braided type, which improves feel and performance. It was worth changing just for that improvement. You can buy pipe kits ready made on Ebay and elsewhere.

I have not heard of this 'changing' brake lines theory either. I have an 86 FXR with original brake lines still going strong; so suspect its propaganda by a vendor trying to sell us stuff we do not need.

The basic composition of the scooter brake hoses is identical to the automotive flex hoses and they survive years of operation in conditions much more harsh than any motorcycle would encounter. Inspect periodically and replace as necessary due to cuts, abrasions or fraying ( especially at/near the crimped ends ) and you're good to go.

Thanks to all for your replys. My situation is this. My front brake lever, on the first squeeze, actually hit the handlebar, but, when I hit it at least twice, it pumps up and applies the brakes as expected. i have since rebuilt the master cylinder with the Harley kit and bled through a complete change of brake fluid, still the same problem. I'm going to change the hoses anyway to be a little proactive, but is there anything else you might suggest? Thanks again.

You have 'soft front brake pull', there is a Sticky in the Tech Brakes section with suggestions on fixing it. Essentially you still have air in the system, which you need to get out.

One thing you could try is squeeze the lever a few times until the pressure firms up, then while holding the lever in, wrap a bungee cord around the lever and grip. Leave it like that over night and see if it helps. It worked for me.
