Why do I see so many bad *** stage 1 bikes but most all seem to use the stock air cleaner (football) on them. Is there a reason the stock product is a better way to go?

I wanted pipes and picked an AC that looked like I changed it. I didn't like the Heavy Breather at first but I'd do it again 100x. But they said different pipes means different AC and while I'm no pro, I don't think stock will work. Maybe someone knows for sure.

The stage 1 intake with the stock cover is probably the cheapest option. Some people like the looks of the stock cover as well.

It may be the stock cover, but it's over a hi-flo A/C, without the backing plate. Just like mine.

The way you can tell the difference is that the hiflow intake with the stock cover will stick out about an inch more out.

Cost & looks...some owners like to maintain the stock look on their bike & the filter for State-1 will fit so you'd never know w/o removing cover.

I have yet to see an air cleaner cover other than stock that i like on a Heritage.

The nightster i had used a heavy breather but it fit the style of bike.

Just like i would probably only put fringe on a heritage or deluxe maybe a soft bag roadking. Anything else it looks out of place

As stated, on my Heritage, I wanted the old time look. Im running an HD Nostalgia series cover BUT I have it over a stealth intake. The open element design just doesnt look good on some bikes..

my guess would be that most didn't want to spend the extra $$$ to change to a different looking cover. You still get the same air flow with the Stage 1 kit behind the original cover. and I agree, on some (very few though) that original cover looks good. I ride a SG and I think the original football shaped cover is as hideous as the stock wheels that came on it. I've yet to come up with the extra cash to change the wheels though... and that will be my next upgrade unless I move up to a rushmore model. and speaking of the rushmores, the air cleaner on it is an improvement over the old football style, but to me it is still not very nice.
