You know, that shows that HD prices haven't really gone up that much (based on some really quick Census data). In 1981, the nominal US Household Income was $17,743. That price was $6500 (assuming it was new) - 17% on that annual income. In 2012, the nominal US Household Income was $49,486. IN 2012, a new Road King was $17,499 35% on that annual income.

Way too much math for the weekend... I'm gonna have to take your word for it.

6500/17,743= 37%

Think you have a typo in there.

Definitely a typo. It was getting late in the evening for me, but you are correct, and I think you see what I was going for. Thanks for pointing it out though!

Really not that much difference when you factor in how much more money folks make now.

No fees, there were no fees!
Where's the freight, dealer setup, title, licensing fees?
And I guess back then blue paint didn't cost more than black paint.

That's very cool, thanks for posting it.

haha good points! I didn't think of that when looking at it. Price of bike plus state tax, and now it's just presumed you'll pay all of the above fees as normal.

Sounds about right. I paid about $2100 OTD for my old 71 Sportster and that was a lot for a bike. My 71 BSA Rocket 3 was only $1600 brand new and my 67 Triumph TR6 was even less.
