Get something you won't lose your mind over if you drop it. Not saying you will, but the odds do. If a Harley is not so much money for you it would bother you then get one. If you don't want to possibly drop an expensive bike then don't. You can learn on anything, but to truly learn you should push the bounds some, at parking lot speeds, Ride Like a Pro, MSF intermediate and advanced course style learning and the odds are the bike will go down. However, you will become a better rider for it.

If you want a Harley get a Harley . Sporties are fine bikes and a decent rider on a 1200 can run off and leave the geezer glides. Any Harley is a good starter bike. Here's a fun one for you: find an XR1200. Best handling HD and with over ninety horses, you will have great fun with one.
