Here we go again. It won't be long before there are people in here arguing that despite all of its benefits, lane-splitting is wrong because it's "cutting in line." As long as it's done safely, what it's actually doing is making use of space that's otherwise empty, getting motorcycles where they're going much faster, and cars where they're going a little faster.

I've made this analogy on here before, and I'll make it again: You're at Target. You've got a basket with five items in it. The other people waiting to check out have carts full of anywhere from 15 to 30 items. You can wait in line with them, and take a while to get out of there. Meanwhile, there are people behind you waiting to get rung up, but they won't be able to move until you're checked out and on your way. The alternative is, you can get in the express line. No one else can, because they have too many items. But you get in the express line, you're out of there while everyone else is waiting in line- only, they're not waiting quite as long because you're no longer taking up that space. That's lane-splitting.

I live in Los Angeles and lane splitting was one of the main reasons I first bought a bike 8 years ago. I save myself at least an hour to commute time when I ride. But, like any other aspect of riding, if you speed or are unsafe then the risk of an accident increases. I don't split lanes every time but I feel safer knowing that I can get out of the flow of traffic and into a free lane when I need to. Especially when I end up at the end of a line of cars and I don't trust the people behind me to see me.

Yes, for lane splitting!! Some UC Berkley students were at the local HD dealership some time ago, asking questions about lane splitting. I'm glad it worked for us. I'm sure someone will say, no way is lane splitting OK & that's fine with me.

good points. frowned upon in Washington state but I do it some time for the reasons above. I shure helps when you can ride by a mile of traffic and find out that its caused by some dipshit not taking a free right or needs all 4 lanes to be clear as far as they can see to proceed .

This is funny thread...where is my popcorn.

I vote they make us a special lane so we don't have to worry about people tossing their coffee out the window when we go by....or opening their doors, or even moving over to try and squeeze the bike into another car.

Then we can all be happy...even those who don't like lane splitting.

If I did not split lanes going home (and going to work for that matter)my bike would melt just sitting in line.
Yesterday was pretty bad.At 4:45pm, the traffic was stop and go for 30 miles!
