Default Recommendations for a mid-size Harley

My son has a 650 Honda Shadow...and after some discussion he is looking at upgrading to a Harley.

He has limited funds. Figures he can get around $3,000 for his bike, and has about $4,000 to throw in on top of that.

He was looking at the Sportsters, of course, because of the price. But, he is 6' about 190 and it felt a little small. So, he is looking at the Dyna line up, or maybe the Fat Bob. But you have to go pretty old, with a lot of miles to get a Fat Bob in that price range.

Any recommendations?

Chopper Exchange is a good resource. He should be able to find a decent bike for $6000-$7000.

$7,000 is a pretty decent down payment on a late model Dyna.

Everybody loves their own bike, so you'll probably get a lot of opinions based on what people ride themselves.

If he only has 7k, in my area, it would be tough to find anything decent beyond a sportster. Some softails and vrods go around 10k, if he can save a little more up. With the dynas up here, it really often depends on the mods that have been done and the mileage, but they are usually a bit more.

Of course, he's already realized he could get a pretty nice, bigger metric for that price, so I won't even mention it.

Yeah, that's all he wants to spend. He's pretty careful with his money and doesn't like payments. so, he wants to find something he can pick up for that kind of cash.

He's not far from a 2008 or 2009 Fat Bob or Street Bob which are good years for the 6 speed transmission and the 96' motor. My '09 runs like new. These bikes are pretty bullet proof if maintained. I've seen them for around $8,000 and up in decent shape. Just gotta hunt for the best deal. There's also the Dyna Super Glide which is as stripped as a Dyna gets. He should be able to find one of those even cheaper. Won't have all the pretty parts, but they are fine bikes.

I think your son may be a bit optimistic on how much he'll get for his 650 Shadow. Just keep that in mind.

07 or up Superglide. Lowest priced Dyna when new. 06 had some issues that can be addressed, but that's $$. Winter is a great time to buy, but a bad time to sell.

He might find a late evo Dyna or an early twin cam in that price range. 95'-01

I've seen a number of deuces in the $7-8 range here in the last few months. Keloland.com (loca cbs station) has an auto mall/ bike listings. A few bikes under 8k anyway several soft tails and a couple tourers. 96-02 range. Anywhere this far north with snow ice on the road is gonna take a bite out of the price. Makes a test ride an issue though
