Default Oil Filter Issue - (noob question)

I had my bike getting some basic work done on it at a shop. Figured I would just have them change my oil since they would be working on it anyways.

I've always used the black oil filters but instead they put an ugly chrome one on mine. I cant stand how it looks, and want to quickly throw on a black one before I "dirty" the oil up too much. Figured just ride it to the store, get the filter, take it home and switch out real quick...

Does anyone recommend against do this? Any tips that might help me? Should I do it cold or warm? I'm sure I will lose some oil so I'll put a little in the new filter before I put it on and then monitor my oil level and add some if needed.

Sorry for such a noob question, thanks in advance!

Do it cold. Fire it up, warm it up properly, let it sit, check the oil, and add more if necessary. Be sure to prime the new filter if you ride a twinkie.

Some people swap out just their oil filter between oil changes. Won't hurt anything, but it would be a waste of money.

Just change your oil again a little sooner than you normally would, if you absolutely hate the chrome.

I say just ride it out to your next oil change at that time tell them you want a black filter and its a few dollars cheaper too. But if you do it your going to lose about 1/2 QT never had a question like this before but I always change my oil when the engine is hot.

Don't change it hot... you'll lose more oil.

never heard of priming the filter -- haven't done it in 110,000 miles on this bike or any other bike I have owned --

do it while its cold for filter only --- I ran extended drains on my oil change the filter around 6,000 and all the oil at 12,000 -- no problems
