as per the instructions given by 90% of you on here, when i cracked open my primary, i was told not to bother changing the gasket. it'll be fine, they said. i've reused mine 3 times already, they said. well, mine leaks. now i have to pull the thing off again. thanks, jerks!

So is 3 times the max they can be reused? I reused mine now 3 times as well. Next time a problem or did the OP maybe tweak it a little? Is there a max reuse?

I've had mine off probably 10 times already and still have the factory gasket in there. No leaks yet.

Was it the OEM HD gasket that you re-used?

Its hard to believe that 90% of the experienced forum members are wrong, but it should always be understood that they're offering advice and personal opinions, .....ultimately the decision lies with you.
It's important to fully degrease the surfaces, gasket confirmed in good condition, and tighten down in the correct sequence and torque - I'm not assuming that you didn't, just mentioning it.

Like the majority here, I also believe that the OEM gaskets are good, but James gaskets are just that little bit better.

A forum search will confirm that you should stay clear of Cometic.

Tried an aftermarket gasket once, leaked like a seive. One thing Harley does really well is gaskets. Have had no problems re-using my primary gasket.

To me, any "spring loaded dumbass" should know to replace gaskets always.... unless they want to take a chance on doing it a second time. Again this is only my opinion.

Conservation is the best.

Get as much as you can out of something before you replace.

For instance, when you do an oil change, after draining, just take an old tee shirt and strain the old oil through it and reuse.
