Flooded while sitting?: Carb

Flooded while sitting?: Carb
So I hadn't ridden in a week, I picked the bike off the kickstand, backed it up, and put the kick back down to put my helmet on......... I look down and gas is dripping from the filter......I try and start it and it's flooded....... took a bit to start, rode to work and it's fine. 03 Deuce Carb Model......... what are some things to look for? Would Throttle/Idle cable adjustments cause it? That's the only think I've messed with recently.
Thanks in advance :-)

Sounds like the float in the carb stuck while you were backing it out. Maybe a small piece of crud got stuck between the needle and seat, and allowed fuel into the motor.
If it quit leaking after a ride, you should be ok. But keep an eye on it.
I dont think adjusting cables was the cause.

Sounds like two problems.
It wouldn't leak at the filter...there's a puke tube coming out of the float bowl, running around the back of the pushrod covers leading to the ground. If your float sticks, that's where the gas will come from. It's supposed to keep excess gas from flooding the cylinders. Make sure it isn't plugged, and then drop the float bowl off the carb, clean it and the seat where the needle valve goes. Don't leave the petcock "on" when you aren't riding.

Even though the petcocks are vacuum controlled off the engine, turn off the petcock prior to engine shutdown. If my bike is going to sit for a length of time I'll let the engine idle for a moment with the petcock off , this lowers the level in the float chamber. This might sound silly, smell your engine oil, if you smell gas then change your oil and fix that float.
