Harley2010 | Accidentally popped into 1st gear from Neutral without clutch; uh oh
Hey-
1St Bike(2010 hd softtail custom) & before shutting it off I accidentally popped it into 1st gear from neutral without the clutch. It jumped forward & stalled. When trying to start it back up(in neutral) it sounded klunky & wouldn't start. So I left it alone for about an hour & then tried again. It started right up & it ran for about 3-5min like normal then sounded like it was revving & stalled. After that I couldn't get it to start & stay on for more than a min. or 2. So i figured I'd leave it alone until the morning. Today I cant get it to start & stay on for more than a couple seconds to a minute(still in neutral). Did I do some serious damage or am I missing a simple newbie oversite???
Please help

Everyone does what you did at some time.
No damage to the bike.
If the bike stalling is related (and I don't think it is) it would be related to the neutral safety switch, or if lurched hard enough, maybe you jarred some crud in the tank loose and it flowed to the fuel filter and your bike is starving out for fuel.
Both, long shots.
Are you out of fuel???
His bike is a 2010 so no petcock. That was my first thought.
A couple of times a year I will do that and get about a block when the bike reminds me.

thanks for the attempt..... I'm defiantly confused---- thought I'd try it again & still same thing but now it sounds like I killed the battery trying to start it sooo much....is that even possible?(just got a new battery for it???)

If I were in your shoos I wouldn't screw with it. I'd take it to a mechanic,
unless you are one, shade tree or professional.

Do you have a friend that knows about bikes to look over your shoulder?
Yes, you could have killed the battery, still unlikely if it is knew, but I don't know how long you've been cranking the bike.
If you changed the battery out, do you have the battery terminal tight? If they are lose they might cause what you describe. The lurch may have helped loosen one of them.
Again, are you confident you have fuel?
DO NOT jump your battery from a running car.

Thanks for the suggestions... I definitely have fuel....a clogged fuel line might be a possibility...stupid question--- how would I clear that? Remove hoses or something simpler??
