Default Travel ? re: Hwy 2 out of Washington

Later this month I am headed to Corvallis OR to visit my daughter. From there heading to Camano Island WA to visit the gravesite of my grandfather (mom's side.)

After that I am planning on HWY 2 east from Washington to Kalispell Mo. Any you northern folks have advise for travelling HWY 2?

Thumbs up

panz4ever, Rte 2 going east from Washington to Kalispell is a FANTASTIC motorcycle road. It has hundreds of curves, elevation changes, long swoopies, and you are in the mountains and valleys the whole way.

I've ridden it 3 times, the most recent in 2011 with a biking pal. There were times when we didn't see another vehicle in either direction for a half hour and longer. It follows the Kootenai River for many miles.

In my opinion, this is one of the top 20 motorcycle roads in the country.

Have a great trip!

Did that a few years ago. It was one of my favorite parts of a 4000 mile trip.

The Hwy 2 path through the mountains will take your breath away- a legendary route. Excellent plan.
Hwy 20 wouldn't be a slap in the face either...car or motorcycle.

If you want scenics and aren't in a rush, I'd take rte 20 over the N. Cascades and pick up US 2 at Newport, WA at the border of ID.

Yes, Yes to going over Hwy. 20, the North Cascades Highway. You will come off Camano Island at Stanwood and head east to I-5. Go north to Burlington, then east on Hwy. 20. Diablo and Ross lakes are beautiful and they are the reservoirs for Seattle City Light dams. I rode over Washington Pass a couple of years ago and there was about six feet on snow off the road in late July. I bet it's almost bare this year because snowfall was light this winter and it's been so damn hot.

Be extra watchful for deer when you head down the pass toward Mazama and Winthrop. Middle of the day and 100+ degrees? Doesn't matter, they are still wandering around being stupid.

You'll end up at Pateros on the Columbia River (bad fire there last summer, so stop for lunch, they need more business). Beautiful scenery all across northern Washington to the Idaho border.

It is a nice ride down to Pateros, but stay on the 20 and go over Loup Loup Pass, much nicer and you wont have to work your way north back to the 20 at Okanogan.
