Default Dropping resale values hit the Sportster line...

Found me a '99 model Electra Glide....customed to the gills today....$13,000.
Called my friend \ salesman at the dealer and said I could afford that bike if it was on your floor and I could trade mine in on it....he said NO PROBLEM....we do that all the time! We'll buy the bike from him, basically, and sell it to you.

So we started talking numbers. First shock was his boss would only let him give $9,000 for the EG. ??????
Second shock was (and I was told this was TOTALLY unexpected) but being that my '06 was a carb. bike and they were "taking a nose dive lately" ???????? I could only get $7,500 for my XL 1200!!!!!!!

Let's review.....$4,000 deficit on the Electra Glide........$3,500 deficit on the XL 1200.......+ T.T. and L.........I'M OUT! If I had $7,500 I could blow with no conscience, I would not even think about going the financing route. But what I can't get over is .....

"the carb. bikes have been taking a nose dive lately in resale, especially the Sportys"

One last thing.....the guy I talked to is seriously a friend of mine....has never lied to me in the past, and I trust him.

sell yours yourself, and buy the 'Glide yourself... yuor buddy's boss is trying to make his markup. Nothing wrong with that, that's how they make money...but you can eliminate it by doing it all yourself

Friend of mine has a '05 1200C with right around 7,000 miles, and in perfect condition..

He has it priced at $6,000, and in the past month he hasn't had one bite... [8D]

He wants a Softail, and the last time I talked with him he said if the Sportster doesn't sell within the next couple of weeks he is just going to trade it at the dealer and take whatever they offer.

There are thousands of Sportsters on the used market. Cycle Trader alone has hundreds. Ditto for Dynas and every other flavor of Harley. Bye-bye resale value. It's a buyer's market.

The only time that will effect me and my Sportster is if I sell it and that's not in the plan at this time. It doesn't change the bike at all.

Yep dealer offered me 7,500 for my 06 xl1200c also. its not that the resale is taking a dive, its that there are brand spanking new ones on the floor people can buy for 9,000. I cant imagine this is a new problem, i think this year they are jsut gettign a huge amount of used bikes because of the 96 coming out.
