Question I need tuning adivce.

1984 Super Glide- FXRP- 1340CC- 5 speed- stock intake- open exhaust- has good and equal compression.
Pilot jet 50 Main jet 170
Problem--Runs too rich(black smoke even while engine is idling)
Installed 48 Pilot jet which stopped smoke at idle. Created bad hesitation when rolling throttle just above idle. Installed adjustable 180 Main jet. Didn't seem to help anything. Difficult to time because of oil spray in the sight hole. I've set timing from extreme retarded to extreme advanced and everywhere between which doesn't change the hesitation much.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, gregjo1948

What carb on her?
I have an S&S....Super E. This year it seemed to start sputtering and popping more while at idle, and esp when you crack the throttle when you're about to pull away from a red light or stop sign.

So I "zero'd out" the carb....the accel pump screw all the way back in..and then the 2 1/2 or 2 'n 3/4 turns back out...(or whatever they were...was a couple of months and many beers ago)....and the other screw too. Just looked up the stock, default settings....and fine tuned from there. Ran much better.

If you are running the stock Kehin carb you will never get it to run right. The transition between the low and high speed jets causes a lean spot. It's the nature of the beast, that's why someone put the the #50 low speed jet in it which as you know, didn't work either.
Change out the carb to a Kehin CV (stock on later Harleys) or S+S or Mikuni. The stock CV is the cheapest option, there are used take offs everywhere. You won't believe how much better the bike will run.

The open exhaust could be your problem. There seems to be a reversion point right where you complain about. Try putting in some minimum restriction baffles and see if it goes away. Other than that there may be a problem with the accelerator pump.

If I get a CV carb is there a certain size or model I should look for? Will I have to change my cables and air cleaner or manifold? Thanks, gregjo1948

It's the stock Keihin carb and stock cam. How would float level affect acceleration? It's not over flowing and doesn't run out of fuel at higher rpms. Thanks, gregjo1948
