I am very inexperienced at working on bikes, so please bear with me if this is a total noob question.

I changed the derby cover from stock to a precision billet cover on my wife's 2015 road king tonight. The stock cover had a rubber ring in it, but the new derby cover did not. Do I need any sort of gasket for this?

thanks

Follow up question. If I need a gasket, is it ok to ride the bike to the dealership without one installed? Will a short gasket free trip be a problem?

You will need the paper style gasket available at any HD dealership. And no, don't ride without it, as it would probably make a mess.

I'm not familiar with your new derby cover, so I can't say which gasket you need. Stro seems to know more about it than I do. But definitely don't ride without it. Without the cover sealed, your primary case will lose oil.

Since you have to take the new one off again, just put the old one back on to go to the dealer. I'm with you, why drive if you can ride.

^^^ Correct.

If it's not all stuck and squished you can probably use the original quad seal to get to the dealer.

Put the old cover on with the 'O' ring gasket if you must ride to get the proper gasket.
Photo of the gasket you'll need with the new derby cover. Bead side facing in when installed.

Much better gaskets out there now than those with the old pressed paper...James, and Cometic, make long life gaskets with silicon embedded into them where it's needed. Able to be reused quite a bit. That embedded silicon bead is perfect for the flat surface billet stuff.

I had this same "gasket" with my derby cover and wondered why the writing had to be facing inside. It didn't look any different than the other side.

If you haven't found out already, it's a PITA to fill up the primary w/o a funnel. I just bend the old gasket and stuff it between the clutch and cover, instant funnel, no mess if you pour slow too. And don't overfill is rule #1 on the primary, it'll shift like crap and finding neutral sucks too.

x 2

I think the part # is 25416-70A.

Or that might be the old, but it looks the same and they will have it in stock, unless they sold out since it does fit almost every HD made for quite a few years.
