Default Balaclava or similar - what do you like?

I'm in the market for something to keep my face/neck/ears a little warmer on chilly mornings. I have a very old neoprene face/neck/ears wrap type thing, but I've never cared for it, plus with breathing through it, it always got wet and cold anyway, plus it didn't go over my head, so it ALWAYS falls down and ends up being just a turtle neck haha. I'd also like to have something that would still work well with my 1/2 helmet I wear.

I found this on HD's site, looks promising, but concerned it will be too loose and move around when I try to put my helmet on and bunch up:

Anyway, what do other people recommend? My only requirement is that its not super $ and isn't overly "loud" in it's design - I don't want a ton of skulls, eagles, flames etc - not really my thing.

Thanks

I would think any balaclava would work. I don't wear them for riding but have a bunch for snow blowing and plowing with the ATV. Always wore them on the snowmobiles. Seeing you are from Wisconsin I would head over to the local snowmobile dealer and grab a few from there. I remember them being sub $10, I'd grab a couple and change them out when they get damp and still be less than the one with the HD logo.

When it's cold a wear a military surplus balaclava under a DOT halt helmet. Works well for me and it was cheap!

I have the HD one, got it for 50% off at the dealer last spring. It is thin but warm, I use it sans helmet in temps down to 40 or so. Stays put on my big melon at highway speeds.

I wear a Marine Corps winter weight FROG (Flame Resistant Organizational Gear) Balaclava. US made and fire resistant if you hit an IED on your bike.

...... a thicker balaclava works well w/the half helmet
..... thinner works well under a full face
.......... all depends on how tight you've got your helmet fit

Ergodyne N-ferno #6821 fleece balaclava here. Works GREAT and you can wear it under your helmet, by itself, or bunch it up around your neck for neck protection on cold rides. Without it, seemed every spring & fall I would get a very sore throat from riding in the cold. Think I'm even wearing it in my snow blowing Avatar.

I have never seen a Balaclava fit loose. If you find one that does please let me know.

Don't forget to take the mask off before entering a bank and convenience stores.

I wear a full-face helmet which provides all the above features plus protects your chin in the event of a spill. Much warmer.
