Default How to get rid of burn marks on exhaust

I made the mistake of letting my heal of my boot touch the screamin' hot exhaust shield the other day. Does anyone have any tricks to get those unsightly brown rubber burns off the chrome? It looks like hell.

I used wd40 and a credit card. Also used some fingernail. I have read on here about oven cleaner after the pipes have gotten hot.

WD-40 and 0000 steel wool works well too for boot bacon.

Acetone also works good on cold pipes.

Nevrdull seems to work ok too. At least Sometimes.....Funny how there doesn't seem to be 1 set way.....I usually try several different things, as long as I'm not scratching the Chrome.

Good Luck

When you get 'em cleaned up. Get a good quality chrome paste. Start the bike and put your hand on the mufflers. Let them heat up until you have to pull your hand off due to the heat. Shut off the bike and start rubbing on the chrome paste. Liberally apply and let it set for a few minutes then wipe off. The molecules in the metal expand with the heat absorbing the paste. Won't keep you from getting the marks on the pipes buy makes it a whiz to clean off with regular chrome polish.

Be careful with oven cleaner. It is not friendly to paint and polished aluminum. 0000 steal wool doesn't scratch you pipes. Just use a little wax as lubrication.

Scrape it off with a penny ( No, it won't hurt the chrome at all)
Then polish.

I would be careful using oven cleaner - you could end up with a real mess on your hands.

I would also caution against using ANYTHING abrasive (ball of foil, penny, screw driver, etc). They can and will scratch your chrome.

Harley makes a pretty neat product called Boot Scuff Remover. It's cheap and works. Shake it up, put it on the dried-on boot/raingear/flip-flop/etc, and let it sit for 15 or 20 minutes. The chemicals soften the burnt-on plastic or rubber, and makes it MUCH easier to remove. Depending on how much you've melted on, you might have to repeat the application a second time. Then, once you're done, finish with your favorite chrome polish.

Also a product called Top Brite will take it off (use a cloth / rag) will not scratch it up and does the best job polishing metal ... I've ever used. Use it on uncoated metal surfaces. I like it better than mothers.
