Default Drive Belt Durability?

Had a buddy break a drive belt this past weekend while at the Hot Springs Rally. His bike is a CVO RG w/ 110 with extra performance mods.

Another buddy and I were talking about it and he just went on about how that belt won't hold up to that extra power.

Just wondering at what point in performance upgrades do you need to do something different than the belt? Anyone here have that problem to? and about where in the HP/TQ numbers do you think the belt needs to go?

Maybe thats why high powered Harley drag bikes use chains.A belt should hold up to any modified street bike if maintained and adjusted properly.Objects such a rocks and road debris could also factor in a broken or damaged belt.

^^^^^ Yeah that^^^^^ A properly maintained OEM belt can handle anything and everything a hopped up 110" motor can throw at it. Your buddy is FOS.

Plenty of bikes with hopped up 124" still using the stock belt.

Drive belts do fail. Improperly adjusted, or damage caused from rocks trapped between the belt and pulley are frequent culprits. A small hole in the center of the belt usually isn't cause for alarm, but visible damage to the edge of the belt is a sure sign the belt will need to be replaced.

I have the S&S 106 kit with 10:1 compression and have not had a problem with my belt and currently have just over 43,000 miles

At 130K, my original belt still looks great. That is scary though.

"Properly Adjusted" is the key. If you or the Technician that's working on the bike isn't using the "Harley Tension Tester Tool" Harley Part Number 40006-85 I can absolutely, positively, guarantee you; that it isn't being adjusted correctly. The Tool lists for like $35 but can be bought on eBay for $22-$23. There isn't any excuse for not doing it correctly.

At 130K, have you thought about taking the plunge and changing it? Probably also good opportunity to freshen the primary bits, new swing arm bushings, etc.
