New member Connecticut w/question
Hi, new member to the page, I just bought a 2002 Softail Heritage Classic. Just took it out for an hour, seems to be riding fine, by as I was heading home, the red engine light came on. I saw some threads about how to check diagnostic codes, but the readout on mine was different and I don't have a manual. Any suggestions on next steps that don't involve just bringing the bike in for service? Not a rich man...so I'd like to try and figure out what the problem might be before proceeding...Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi, I was reading this thread about diagnostic codes and how to determine theIr meaning. I tried it on my 2002 Heritage softail classic, but the coffee that came up was different. It read "d01clr". Any suggestions on how to find out why my engine light came on? Or what that code means?
Welcome to the forum.
You can search for instructions on how to retrieve the error codes for your model, and the interpretation.
Try these:

Good luck finding the code. Hope it's minor. If not, if you want an independent shop, check out http://www.laurelandharleycycles.com/
They are in Stratford, CT. I can't say for sure how it is at the dealership in New Rochelle, but your other option is Danbury. I worry about most dealer techs working on older bikes. A lot has changed since 2002, and Fred has been working on Harleys for over 30 years. I love stopping by, half the bikes I see in his shop are over 20 or 30 years old.
Wow that really turned into a plug for that shop - I have no affiliation, just a satisfied customer.
