Default new from houston w/question

im tyler, im 22. from houston, now that introduction is over i have a question.

my previous bike was a 04 vtx 1300. i know, metric ya. loved it. big size comfy but slower than ****. now i want a harley. but im on a 4500 budget. may finance undecided yet tho. been looking at sportsters, would they be okay as a daily rider? im 6 foot, 200 lbs. would be used as a work vehicle. im on a highway to and from work, and the weekend cruise type of bike, my wife who is like 5'5 tops and only like 100lbs would be with me maybe once a month on it. any info on the ride quaility and if this would be a good bike to get?

Welcome and save your money for a road king or street glide. You will be happier with either one.

Bypass the Sportsters entirely and at the very least get a Dyna or any other Hawg.

What he said. Your budget is the main constraint but it's more expensive in the long run to get a sporty then realize you should have a Dyna at minimum.

Sportster is way too small look at either a Soft Tail or a Bagger

There's nothing wrong with a Sportster, but, in my opinion, it's not the bike that would meet your described needs. It sounds like you would be happier with a larger bike. i moved from a Sportster to a Heritage, and the difference is remarkable.

Well unless you find a 1200 your " slower than **** " comment will resurface with a sportie and unless you have some basic wrenching skills and be willing to invest some time & money not much will change that with one.

They are reliable as it gets but they are not gonna break any performance records stock.

Get an Evo powered Heritage Softail Classic or Road King.

There are plenty of Evo's around for good prices and are extremely easy to work on.

No, mine is NOT for sale!

My recommendation would be to find a clean FXR. For somewhere between 4 and 6 grand you can get a nice one. Awesome bikes for beginners and seasoned riders as well. Great handling and ride.......and.....it's a big twin! Easy to personalize and customize.

Welcome to the forum, Tyler. I bought my first Harley from Mancuso's in 1988 when his only location was on the north loop.

A Sportster would likely meet your needs.... but not for long. Soon after you buy one you will wish you went bigger. In addition, your wife would be more comfortable on a larger bike.

Now, taking into account your budget, a Dyna model would be your best choice. If you could swing it, I would look at Softails. I don't know many 22 year olds that ride baggers.

So this is my recommendation for you (in order of preference) :
1. Dyna
2. Softail
