Default Orlando to Daytona

As luck would have it I'm going to be in Orlando in a couple days and was thinking I could sneak up to Daytona on Friday. I'd like to ride up the coast on Rt.1 just to be by the ocean. Does anybody have any experience with taking that route? roads, traffic, etc...

Thanks!

How to get from Orlando to US1 would depend where you are in Orlando. 192, 528, or 50 will get over there. There really isn't a great way over. Once on US1, a lot of people like to cross the bridge in Titusville and ride through the Canaveral National Seashore, which will dump back on to US1 in Oak Hill. Bike traffic will start building up around Edgewater & New Smyrna Beach. If you want, cross the Dunlawton bridge in Port Orange & travel up A1A to ride within view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Whichever way you decide, make sure I-4 isn't your choice.

I was on US 1 today. For the most part not too busy. Friday will most likely be a different story. In any event take the trip and enjoy. It would help to know if you are driving or riding and what part of Orlando you are leaving from.

I drive that road every couple of months. That's a straight shot on I-4, 60 miles or so, with a ton of construction and a ton of traffic. I was nearly involved in pile-up there in January, a combination of heavy traffic, erratic driving (the OTHER drivers LOL), and construction zones. If you can, you might consider a slightly longer but safer and more scenic trip on secondary roads.

I 4 is a roll of the dice. Last Friday was clear sailing. Sunday afternoon, heading for Tampa was absolutely painful. If a travel application on your phone shows slow traffic, believe it. Good luck traveling I 4.

From most anywhere in north Orlando, I'd suggest finding your way to Colonial Dr (Hiway 50) and go west till you hit US1. That will wind you up in Titusville where you can cross the river to old A1A or you can stay on US1.

From central or south Orlando, your best bet would be to find Sandlake Road (Bee Line) and go west to I-95 which will guide you to several cross over points to US1. Or go a little further south to US192, then west to US1.

Going all the way to US192 will add several miles to your trip to the west but the scenery is pretty nice. Lots of improved pastures with good chances of seeing deer, wild hogs, or even wild turkeys.

Your choice, but any of the three routes will get you to US1 if that is your ultimate goal.

Ride safe and regards, Joe.
