Default 1997 Harley 883 Rebuild

Excuse me if this is in the wrong section guys, I do apologize, I am a regular over at DoTheTon but this question is more geared towards you guys I believe.

I am eyeing a 1997 Harley 883 Sportster that has gotten a halfway bobber treatment. Hardtail, etc. Cosmetically it will do, I will probably redo it, but my question is about the motor. It has a blown motor, and will indefinitely need new casing and jugs. That is what he said at least.

What would this little rebuild set me back, I am very unfamiliar with Harleys so I do not know if I would loose my *** on this investment.

He is asking 700 bucks, and it has a clean title. Comes with new Hot Cams cams.

I am checking on the state of the valves, and double checking because I am obviously assuming if the jugs need replaced so do the pistons. At this point I am wondering if just buying one of those 883 engines on eBay for a grand, and then selling the good parts off the blown motor, would make more sense financely

To each there own, but very decent 883's can be had in the $2000 range if you have cash. I'm just guessing, but by the time you hobble that together, you would be over what you could buy a decent running one for.

A 1250 kit is about $700 from NHRS in Colorado if the heads are good. Beginners have done the install in a day and a half.

I'd pass on it. You can get a decent mid-90s 1200 for about $2k. Then build from there.
