I proceeded to tell him he better get over here as I was ready for a ride and obviously since he was the last to ride it the fact that it would not crank was on him. Needless to say I was more than just a little unhappy at that moment with my personal mechanic.

Dad, look at the run/off switch on your bars.......Genius

Remember that from your training?

Because it works! 😎

I started riding in the mid-60's. Bikes didn't have kill switches in those days so I never got in the habit of using them and still don't. A few months ago I was looking at replacing my Sporty with a larger bike. I was at the dealer which I frequented but had never ridden my bike there nor test rode any of theirs but had told them I had ridden for many years.
I found a Softail in the back I liked and was offered a test ride. The salesman said he would bring it around front. I met him in the showroom to fill out license info then jumped on the bike for the ride. It wouldn't start. Stone cold dead, Nada nothing. The salesman reached over and flipped the kill switch. Felt like a complete idiot. I am sure he watched me closely to see if I could actually ride.

Man, this thread makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one.
When I picked up my 2013 Street Bob from the dealer I was a new rider. First bike. As I drove around the commercial area getting comfortable, the hazard lights came on. The salesman had shown me the security system just before I drove off, so I thought it had to do with that.
I went back to the dealership and got the salesman. He didn't know why they were flashing. He's a BMW guy so I guess not that familiar with HDs. He asked at the parts counter and no one knew. He had a guy from service come out and he flipped the hazard switch. Apparently I had bumped it without knowing. D'oh.
I also accidentally hit the kill switch a few times when I was first riding. Not recently, so I guess I learned. I also think its placement is bad and could be located somewhere less available to my moron thumb. A couple of times it was at a stop light. Embarrassing. Once, while I was going about 60 on the highway. Pucker time. I just turned it back on, let off the clutch and effectively push started. That really got my attention. Don't think I've hit it since.
