My failed Iron butt challenge story, whats yours?

If you ride another 50 years you will never forget this experience. You will look back and laugh about it. Some of the dumb stuff we do sticks with us for a lifetime. Congrats on the attempt. Maybe plan a little better next time! I hear smart phones have weather radar. lol...
I did my first 1000/24 before the IBA was around on a '76 Superglide. That was about 1980. The ride was sponsored by a mc club out of Rockport(?) Illinois.

Sounds like my vacation last year. First day, beautiful. Second day, fog so thick it just makes everything wet. 2 1/2 hours into the ride, stopped at Black Bear Harley. They weren't open. Started down the hill out of their lot, touched the rear brake and started gaining speed. Fresh seal coat covered in foggy mist = slicker n' snot. I tried the rear brake again still slid. Now the driveway is pretty steep. It tees into a service road. Straight ahead is a guardrail at the top of a retaining wall running along the exit for the highway. I'm looking for my escape route, and there comes a little old lady down the road to my left. So I try the rear brake again, this time I try a little front brake and bam! I'm down. Thrown off the bike to the right. I did a little barrel roll and jumped to my feet. As I'm spewing obscenities, the little old lady pulls up and puts her window down. "Are you ok?". Me "yeah that hill's slicker than it looks." The rest of the trip was rainy and cold. Tar snakes and rain make for a butt puckering ride for sure.
Rain drains the energy out of ya. I'm proud of your attempt. I'm proud of your perseverance. I'm proud that you shared your story. Don't be messing that black beauty up! Sharp bike brotha. I haven't tried an iron butt yet. I've been to southern Kentucky 3 times this summer for work. Gps says it's 8 hrs. Never made it either way in under 10. Rain almost every trip both ways. It can be very strenuous trying to put those hours in to begin with, the rain just kills ya.

You know, I think you're right, Larry....but to paraphrase another poster in another one of these posts earlier tonight: some people are happiest when they can revel in the misery of others...
I like the Iron Butt story. I hope this guy gets a chance to try again and finish successfully.

So what was your final mileage for the day? The second time you saw your buddies, you should have at least got your rain gear from them. I would have probably been done after the spill.
I did 820 miles in 16 hours with about 1/2 being in the rain. I was glad to be done at 820 when I pulled into the garage. I am not sure that I could have done another 3 hours.

Had I known about the Iron Butt about 10yrs ago I'd probably have it, but on a sportbike. Helluva story & attempt OP! If the weather's remotely better the next time I'm sure you'll make it.
