My first Harley was my 85 Sportster. Loved it. Had it for years and put a lot miles on it.
Had few smart a$$ comments about it. Did not really care anyway. I enjoyed it.
Worked for me. I have moved on to an 09 Fatbob and I really like it, but have no regrets with the sportster.

OK I'm not a girl and it's a baby Harley thought to be gutless and good for street only, lacking anything over 65 therefore motorway's are no goes.
I will only keep it a couple months and want to up grade due to lack of power and the valves will burn out as it's got short shots and no other mod and o yeh
The small tank is useless as I will only do 60 uk miles out of it and will be constantly filling it up.

Well in reality it rides a lot better than I expected,it doesn't like 5 gear under 55mph
And sits at 70 purring along with no effort at all.
Not as comfortable in legs as my old fatboy and the seat in low all in Which can be adjusted to suit my 29'' legs in time.
it's not heavy it's more retro (what I wanted) than laid back cruiser and hopefully have better tyre choice.
Overhaul I'm not disappointed, I'm please with it and glad to be back to HD
Even thro it's not a big bore softail or glide.
It's horses for courses and suits my needs and the twin stoppers work really well.

I ask why is it frowned upon to own an 883 sportster ?
I don't get your gas mileage remark. You should get 48-55 mpg safely going 125 miles with some gas still in the tank. I have a 1200 and wife has an 883 iron.

My first-ever bike was a 14' Sportster 48. Killer bike. I'll always be a Sporty fan.

I now own a FLS, and in no way do I feel like I own "more of a Harley" now. Had I been able to own 2 bikes, I would have kept the 48.

When I was a kid the sportster was Harley. They are cool and always will be. I have a very good friend that has owned a dozen touring bikes and bought a Sportster about two years ago just to ride locally and he enjoys the bike.

Have fun and ride!

I've had three, the last an '06. Loved them all, wish I had a nice 1200 to go along with my Road Glide.

Eagle15, unless it's really just friendly teasing, only twits and ******* make fun of other people's bikes.

(Twits and ******* are UK words, right? I want to make sure I use the right ones. )

The sportster is the best bike harley makes. They handle great and throw bags on it and you can tour. Unit construction is stronger than a separate motor and trans like my evo too. And yea everyone thinks my evo dyna is a sportster too. I would love a peanut tank to put on it...

Anytime I hear someone on a bagger teasing someone on a Sportster with comments like "Skirtster" or "girls bike", I like to point out that his bagger is more of a girls bike than the Sportster is. After all, it has everything a woman wants in a bike. Big comfy seat so her tushie doesn't get sore, upper and lower fairings to keep the elements and icky bugs off her, navigation because she has no sense of direction and can't read a map, and ample amounts of luggage room so she can bring along **** she doesn't need and will never use.

Sportsters are great bikes. You can do anything on one that you can on a larger bike. There are dudes out there that put some serious miles on Sportsters.

Meh, who cares what others think? If I still liked small bikes to haul *** around town on I'd own a 1200 without a second thought. I grew out of that desire though but I don't think they're girls bikes or any other random comments. Just a quicker smaller bike.
