I'm particular of many things on my Harley's. This issue is so far down my "worry stone" list it's a non issue.

So, a piece of clear film wouldn't eventually wear through......must be some tough stuff?

It is, its the same exact ptotection you make a car bra out of, protection for rocker panels, mirrors, some 911/Vette owners practically do their entire car. So yes, this is what you need and I don't think it will rub through for. A very long time, my guess is never on a bike. XPEL, 3M, good options.

I suspect that whatever is used to protect the tank is far more noticeable than a bit of worn paint

even if it does, easy enough to replace.

but by the same token, i'm not worried about it either.

Its clear, and if installed by a pro you cannot see it unless you are looking for it and then its only the line where it ends. Whatever, rub your paint off, it is yours. I change to a solo seat on occasion, my paint looks brand new whenI do.

I decided 2017 was gonna be the year I tried to look at things from other people's viewpoint and/or try and find positive in things I didn't appreciate or agree with.

The OP has some rub marks in the paint on his tank from the seat and it concerns him. Many, have said that it's absurd to worry about such a thing; a non-issue. I think of it this way; who would you rather buy a used Harley from; guys like the OP, or me? I've had a lot of motorcycles and had a lot of fun on them; but nobody ever got one from me that wasn't just about used up. The OP is way better for the Harley community than a guy like me every day of the week.

Did you get it like that from riding through Twin Creek? There's a few deep spots between Lewisburg and West Alex, be careful.
