Default Leaking oil out of primary inspection cover.

Suspecting rear crankshaft seal leaking engine oil into primary causing oil leak at primary inspection cover. Engine oil level dropping on gauge. Anyone had this problem?

Pull the cover and check the oil level, If the level is to high it likely leaking by the main shaft seal.
Also could be a bad gasket on the cover or the screws are loose.

I didn't think 2008's had an inspection cover. Did you pull the derby cover to check the primary fluid level?

your right. My description was incorrect. Derby cover or clutch inspection cover.

Gasket and or loose screws was my first thought. I was hoping that was the problem. Replaced gasket at first sign of leak. Same issue. Engine oil is now down some after a 250 mile ride. I figure it is the seal leaking. 74,000 miles. Guess it's time for some failures. I may need to take out a loan for this repair.

Have plugs been checked for black sooty color (burning oil)? Oil is down some now, how much is "down some" , what was the beginning level? I believe HD will tell you a qt. per 1000 miles is an acceptable amount. Something isn't adding up.

Many years ago you had a concern about 'Smoke" on start ups. Was that ever solved? Have a buddy ride behind your bike and after the engine is warm, accelerate in 4th gear to about 4K rpm, then get off the throttle real quick and let the engine wind down. Did it smoke blue smoke as the engine was winding down? Drive around a little bit then accelerate real hard, did it smoke on acceleration? When you de-cel. the pistons are sucking in a lot of air creating a high vacuum pulling oil past the valve guides if the guides are bad and oil goes out the cylinders after being burned by the spark plugs. Smoking on acceleration the pistons are creating pressures in the cylinders will push oil past the rings to be burned and out the exhaust. Hope this helps a little.
