I use my backup phone (I.e. the one I had prior to the one I carry every day as an actual phone - currently a galaxy S6 on the bike). My Limited, that I bought used, came with the fairing mount for a GPS, but no gps unit. So I bought a rain cover fit the mount, attached it to a phone case, so the phone in the case snaps right into the mount.

I like the phone, vs a dedicated gps unit, for a couple reasons. It allows multiple navigation options, including Google maps, waze, and CoPilot - which allows for full nav with no cell or data service, in case I need it where I don't have coverage. It also functions as a music source (either my music collection stored on board, or streaming), and as of a couple weeks ago, also gives me access to my FP3.

I don't actually have an active line for the phone on the bike - I use my regular daily carry phone as a hot spot, and leave it plugged in in the tour pak. It feeds internet to the phone on the fairing.

Ok, that helps.

I have the Harley Garmin wired in, a very nice setup. Waterproof. You can add your own routes and there are a ton of people that create custom points of interest, etc.

Example is rest stops. Someone published a rather comprehensive POI file for rest stops, and it not only includes highways, but scenic overlooks and roadside parks on the backroads, etc.

Very handy. Check it out: http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles

If money isn't a factor, then the Garmin Zumo's are a great choice. If you don't want to spend a bunch of $, then I would go with a refurbished Nuvi.

Garmin Zumo here. Proven weatherproof, not cell signal dependant, no cell bill either.
My cell phone is off as we ride.
I also use Butler map for the state if there is one; all the best M/C roads highlighted
