[X(]2004 FXST WON'T SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR. BIKE ONLY HAS 3000 MILES ON IT.WHEN USING TOE LEVER -SHIFTING INTO 2&3RD GEAR -LONG SHIFT LEVER SHIFTS TO REAR -BUT HANGS UP AT 3RD GEAR -WON'T GO INTO GEAR -IF I REACH DOWN AND PULL LEVER FOREWORD -IT GOES INTO GEAR . THIS SEEMS OPPOSITE OF WHAT THE LONG SHIFT ROD DOES.

Sound like it's just hanging up and needs to be lubed.The stock end joints are notorious for this and breaking.Pull the rod off and check the ends for corrosion and proper lubrication.

the pivot point inside the housing that your heel/toe shifter articulates in has become fouled with grunge, you need to take the heel and toe shifter off then remove the shifter link from the front bracket slid out the assembly and buff the inner/sleeve bushing ( I use a fine grit drywall sandind block works like a charm) very simple operation, you should be able to knock it out in about 10 minutes.

This is common on new bikes nothing new. It's just one of those things sometime it happens and sometime it doesn't!

 

I had pulled it -was dirty-cleaned and greased -if doesn't work -will pull again and use emory cloth.

There are soft teflon bushings inside the housing. They are cheap ... buy new ones. When I bought them for my wife's FXSTS, they threw in new O-rings too.
