Default 95" vs. 98"

I'm still in a quandry about doing a big bore upgrade on my 02 88" Softail. As it gets closer to cold weather, I start thinking of a winter project like a big bore kit. I wonder what the practical & finacial difference between going with a 95 or 98" kit. Any thoughts and suggestions?

1. choose the right cam
2. get the heads done
3. choose the right compression pistons
4. if you go high compression have compression releases put in
5. make sure you have the right tuner

The difference in cost between a 95 and a 98 is about $500. For the 95" you can bore your stock cylinders, for the 98" you have to buy new. Heads, cams, etc are the same cost for either build.

You cannot bore to 98", not enough material left. Stock heads are fine if they are "breathed on" by someone such as Headquarters or others. Reworked stock heads are better than anything HD sells. Dont ask me how I know.

Dalton, that sounds like good advice and you are obviously knowlegable. Thanks you. With my limited budget it looks like it will be a 95", but I'm curious, what is the performance difference?

theres alittle torque left on the table with the 95, but the HP could be the same if the right parts are selected and tuned properly.

If you go with a HQ build and 10.5 to 1 engine (if 93 oct. fuel is available) will realy twist your knickers!
I have a 10.1 on a 95 with ported heads and compresion releases, It has a real strong torquey feel!
and has good street maners, I have only 91 oct here in LA

How much would you estimate a 95" build would cost if you sent the heads to HQ, encluding cams, but had the installation done locally? I know prices would vary but just a ball park would be OK.
How would this new motor compare to the new 96" motors? I have read they have no more horse power than 88's but are quicker.

Talk to a head man and a builder its all about the right combination of parts and how they turn the torque up when you git on it.
