Help. Installed new levers, now clutch doesn't work right
I posted this in the Engine-Tranny forum without much response so thought I'd try here. Replaced my clutch lever and now the clutch won't disengage the gears. Loosened the tension nut on the cable and backed it down enought to remove the old lever from the housing. Installed the new lever, slid the pins in that hold the cable and the lever into the housing. Tightened back the cable tension nut until I had proper play. With bike not running I put it in gear and squeezed the lever and tried to roll the bike. Won't roll. Adusted the cable nut a hundred different times. Gears won't disengage when the clutch is pulled. Went ahead and cranked the bike. Squeezed the clutch, hit first gear, all seems to work fine. Kill the motor and try it, still doesn't disengage. What did I do? I have read other posts from guys asking how to change levers and didn't do anything that wasn't mentioned. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Hate to think I'll have to bring it in to the shop for something that's supposed to be so easy.

... The tension nut is not propperly adjusted, that would be my best guess since there is no science in changing levers bro... Double check on it step by step just to make sure.
Good luck,

If my bike isn't warmed up, I can't roll it in gear with the clutch pulled in either.
Cold I have to put it in neutral. Did you used to be able to do this? Mine has been this way since new and now 20k+ miles later, it's still like that.

Nutn' to worry about, worry if you gear your bike from N to 1st and if with the clutch engaged you bike does not stop, that happened to me once, it was the tension nut.

Sounds good to me.
Since you only replaced the lever and didn't mess any further it ought to be just like it was beforehand once you reset the free play at the lever.

If I were you I'd adjust the clutch from beginning to end. You shouldbe alright then , It's not much of a job. You'll have to loosen a floorboard up and let it swing down, or take it off. back off the cable adjuster in front of the down tube and take off the derby cover and adjust your clutch there. then take the slack out of the cablel you should be good.`

In your particular case though....it sounds to me like the clutch plates are just staying a bit stuck together enough to make it hard to push the bike when in gear with the clutch disengaged (lever in). If when the bike is running and up to normal operating temp the clutch and lever are working to your liking, your all good.
Just make sure if you do the full clutch adj (VERY easy job BTW) you get a new derby cover gasket. If your going to just adj the free-play at the lever (this would be just fine if you were not having issues with the clutch to begin with) do it cold, and give it like 2 or 3 mm's between the clutch perch, and the corner of the lever. After the bike warms up the free-play will increase a bit....that is normal though.

thanks for all the input. I was concerned because I was able to roll the bike-motor off, in gear, clutch pulled in, before I did this. I will do the whole adjustment from behind the derby cover as suggested just to be safe.
Just want to say, I read this forum often but don't post much. Want everyone to know how much I appreciate this thing and the stuff I learn. Merry Christmas to everyone. If any troops are reading this-thank you for your service and bless you all.

Grab the cable at the lever, pull hard, you should have approx 1/16" between end of cable housing and the clutch lever bracket.Good Luck
