Default Extended Warranty Quote

Stopped by my local HD dealer to get a quote on extended warranty on 2006 EGC (2-yr. expires 1/17/08). $2500 for 4 years was the quote (includes tires/wheels) Question is I may void the warranty becauseof the Voyager Conversion Kit attached, plus I will be using a pull-trailer for long trips. My local dealer says no problem with warranty work, but if I travel outside the local area, may be questionable. I don't do any mechanical work, so is $625 a year coverage worth it?

In my opinion, no. If it was worth it they wouldn't offer it.

Aaaaah... Ken is either an actuary/underwriter or a banker and understands economics very well!!

I agree... and if you have the firm discipline then sock away the same amount of money (plus all the other service contracts you are constantly offered... Sears, Best Buy, etc.) and you will be a wealthy and wise man!

The extended warranty has a specific exclusion if there is any towing equipment attached. It voids the entire warranty.

That said, my dealer is like yours,....no problem, as long as I bring the bike back to them. On the road, it might be a different story (but my hitch comes off with six bolts...)

It sounds very expensive. Ours was a five year extended (seven years total) for a cost of $1799, purchased at the time the bike was, so they've had our money already for two years.
But $2500 for four years is the highest I've heard.

$2500 for a 4 year warrenty? Save your $$$....I paid less then 1/2 of that for 5 years.

The extended Warrenty says if you breathe the wrong way it is voided. Like your dealer though mine has no problems with certian stuff.

As far as voiding the Manufacturer warrenty...it has been said on the forum over and over again. There is a law about what they can cancel a warrenty for.....they must prove the modification or in your case the addtion of a voyager system and trailer caused the issue. Unless it is explicitly stated that some voids the warrenty. Highly doubtful that if your front headlight fell off the could prove that a trailer caused the problem.

Just look up: The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Here's the exclusions on the warranty. Note the second one.

$2,500.00 seems a bit on the high side. I, too, went into the dealership a few days back to see about the extended warranty on my '06 Heritage. They quoted me $1,624.00 for five year coverage.

Generally speaking, most all extended type warranties are a gamble. You may never have the call to need it. And yet again, your bike might go to crap once that two year factory warranty expires. Who's to say? Who's to know? It's a decision that you personally have to be comfortable executing. There are lots of guys on here who can take an entire bike apart and fix damn near anything with their eyes closed. To them, extended warranties may not make the best of sense. But to those who aren't as handy with the wrench as they'd like to be, or who could not afford the coin for a new engine should theirs take a nose dive, maybe an extended warranty does make some sense? Whatever you decide, just make sure you are comfortable with the decision. Because at the end of the day, no one on here is going to pay to get your bike fixed except you; warranty or no warranty. Good luck.

It's a gamble. I equate it to going into a gambling casino. There are some big winners. Most people loose and the big, big winner is the house. I've never bought an extended warranty on any vehicle or appliance that I've purchased and have never had one regret. I'm so far ahead of the curve now that I could probably loose my total bike and be ahead of the game.

Spudster, we too, have an '06, and I specifically bought the extended warranty because of the ongoing cam chain tensioner problem that MCNews kept reporting on.

Right now, at 20K miles, I'm considering cashing in the warranty and applying the money to Andrews gear cams and taking care of the problem once and for all.

But that 1.5% interest on the Anniversary models is calling.....

Rose is right. The most common HD warranty we sell on top of your 2 yr factory warranty, is the 3 year plan (5 yrs worth of coverage is usually enough for most people). That will cost you $1200, so 4 years for $2500 is way over-priced.
