I could be wrong but i believe any moving part is gonna need some lube eventually, i have a set of diamond back cables and i lubed em. Which reminds me of a saying........."the key to life, is proper lubrication".

If you decide to lube your cables, let me tell you about the best cable lube I've ever found and I've tried a bunch of them (including those clamp on things that spray lube all over you and the bike) is a bicycle chain lube calledProlink. It comes in a drip feed bottle and you just take the cable loose and drip it on the wires until it comes out the other end. What makes Prolink so great is that it not only lubes, but cleans the inner cable. It's not really expensive, either, a bottle is like $7 or $8 and it will last a long time for many seasons of riding. If you don't have a bicycle shop in your town that carries it, you can order it from www.performancebike.com. I have no financial stake in this, it's just a good product that really works.

I know some cables (BMW cables for sure) advise against using any type of lube. They have a Teflon plastic liner which lube can harm. But unless the manufacturer say's otherwise, I lube them. Glad to know I'm not alone as far as making a mess. :-)...and I've tried a bunch of them (including those clamp on things that spray lube all over you and the bike)
