Default Clear coating bare metal?

I'm trying to go with a different look on my 05 standard. Can anyone tell me if you can clearcoat bare metal tank and fenders or is primer and paint a requirement to protect the metal? Thank's Michael

A local dealer is. They have some special paint schemes using colors mixed with bare steel. I need to get some pictures of them. I still have to think that a couple clear coats is not much protection though.

05-06 SEFatboys have a paint scheme that includes clear over bare metal. Deadly look!

By bike has parts like that..the section you see on my bike below between the two colors is what you are describing. It looks cool.

Michael, the prepwork has to be much better though. It has to be perfect tin work, clean, clean, clean, and do not touch the tins with your fingers at all before spraying. PPG and DuPont both have great clear's.

My guess is yes, after all, the moco has done so already. May have to apply some sort of prep first.

I have seen where the bike builder ground the fenders and tank with a coarse grinding wheel, then clear coated it all. Looked real sharp too.
YES you can clear coat over bare metal.
TNT motorcycle cargo trailers clear coats over their plain diamond plate when they build a trailer.

Saw a Fatty recently with bare metal clear coated. Looked awesome! The sales dude said "it can't be repaired". I dunno.[]
