New Exhaust Inspection Law in MASS?
Does anyone know the details on this new thing regarding needing a "sticker" or something like that on your exhaust?
I went to a local dealer with a friend and noticed a sign that stated something to the effect of needing something to that effect regardless of how loud they are.
I don't really understand what that means. The mech's at the dealership were all too busy to answer the question for me. Anyone have a clue as to what this is referring to?

If that's the case, whether or not it's important depends on whether or not the local LEO's are enforcing the federal law.

State inspection and law enforcement are cracking down on "loud pipes", but can't come up with a reasonable way to measure it.
There is a federal EPA notice permanantly stamped into the metal, placed there by the manufacturer when the pipes were made, to prove the pipes were designed to meet EPA standards when used on the models listed.
It doesn't matter now how loud or quiet your bike actually is. If you have that stamp, and it's on the right bike, you're considered to be in compliance. If you have aftermarket pipes without that stamp, or it isn't approved for your bike, you fail.
In NY, police can now impound your bike for the absense of this stamp, even if the bike is shut off and parked.

i went and had mine inspected in mass the other day. the tech had me start the bike so he could hear it run. he said that it was an objective thing that they checked to see that they were not "unreasonably" loud. he also said what he considered loud and what a cop considered loud could be 2 different things

Not yet. We've been on a writing and meeting campaign with the city assembly, notifying the AMA and other bike groups. The bill was flawed. Convince assemblymen not to support bill. The hearing has been postponed a several times now. Waiting to see when it comes up again.
