Default Battery---brand---cost---bike---longevity

I am averaging between two and three years per battery per bike. We have a year round riding season with a few off days from weather. No need for a trickle charger and most rides are thirty miles one way at least. Both bikes are rode at least twice a week or more. I average between 12,000 miles to 15,000 miles per year split between two bikes. I am a preventative maintenance nut and have the need to constantly tinker with things. My cables and connections are cleaned, greased, tightened often. If you never owned a bike or have never owned a bike long enough to change the battery refrain from posting third hand knowledge. I have seen these post on batteries before but in todays economy manufactures come and go, or change their names. Their quality can suffer also. What do you run for a replacement battery ---why that choice---life of the battery in years and miles. I have a favorite brand but other riders first hand knowledge has changed my choices on purchases.

Got 3 years on my stock HD battery up here in the cold northeast. Keep it on a battery tender all winter and it still starts on the first hit of the starter. Seems as strong as when it was new. When I need a new battery I'll probably go with another HD.

Just did the maintenance on my '02 road king and noticed my battery is five years old. Still works fine, but I plan on getting a new one just due to the age.
Very interesting to read these posts about batteries right now.

I guess I will just go down to the HD dealer for a replacement?

I got the impression oldairboater was asking for batteries other than HD. I have always used them but my bike's is starting to sound sluggish, and I am tired of paying HD's high prices and was hoping when I opened this thread someone would suggest a different option.

Personally, I think the HD stock battery is as good as most anything else. If I had to buy another brand, I'd probably look at Odyssey batteries. Over 600 cold cranking amps even after 20 seconds. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/ They're not cheap, but seem to hold up well after 4-5 years.

I use the H D factory batteries. If you were to use a Battery Tender and keep it plugged in, you would double or possibly triple the life of the battery!

The HD Battery I just took out of my 99 was 7.5 years old. Hard to imagine a battery lasting longer than that. The battery in the 03 is still going strong.
