Default FLSTC/FX*** and all that Jargon

Can some one explain the logic and basis for all this alphabet soup. I do want to understand and be able to remember different models of HD. I have a FLSTCI which runs great. I understand ST stands for softail, C maybe classic and I is injected. wher is the Heritage here? What would it be if it was carburetted. What does FL mean and FX and so on. Thanks.

FL basically indicates a fatter shorter front wheel with big twin (F).

FX basically indicates a thinner taller front wheel with big twin (F).

ST does indicate soft tail

C can have different meanings such as custom, competition or "C" series

If fuel injected (which most are now) will have and "I". "I" is a transition from carb to injected models.

It's a numbering system that used to make sence. But they've drifted from the "rules" so much that the only so much can be taken from all those letters.

yeah, I got to understanding it to a point as I just read The Great Book of Harley Davidson. Great read. Even if one doesn't like (hard to believe) HD's, the history of the company is amazing. In the book, most of that is explained but as you stated, I think they either varied or have added so much to the line that it varied.

here's mine ......................."05 F.L.S.T.N.I. FL is the style , softtails were styled after the older FL models . ST. softtail . N. Nastagia or Deluxe model softtail . I. injected ( I'd rather be blown ) hehe , A C. in place of the I would indicate a carb model . When they went to injected only . (And some one correct me if I need it) , I think was "06" . They dropped the I & the C designations , and it was then FLSTN . That might have been "07" now that I think about it . ( remember to correct me if I wrong , I forget easy .)..........anyway ..........That's the jist with mine . .............Kev
