Newbie question - What is an FXR?
What is an FXR? Is it a Sportster model? I tried to search for an answer on this site and on google, but I couldn't find one. Sorry for the basic newbie question.
Thanks in advance for your reply,
JJJL

RE: Newbie question - What is an FXR?
The 99 FXR3 has an EVO engine and is totally tricked out. A friend of mine has one.
Her boyfriend has a 99 SuperGlide (FXD) with a TwinCam 88 engine. If you all recall, the twin cam 88 became standard on Dynas and Touring models in 99. The FXR3 was the only rubber mount to still have an EVO engine.

RE: Newbie question - What is an FXR?
Thanks ThudMeister for the examples! The FXR looks to be about the size of a sportster. Is that right? It can be hard to tell from a picture. BTW, I love those pipes on your bike! Very nice indeed!
Thanks,
JJJL

RE: Newbie question - What is an FXR?
The FXR is nowhere near the diminutive size of a Half-A-Harley (Sportster)....
I owned an E84 and an 85. Bullet proof rides.
Just my $1.98

The FXR is not much different in size compared to a sporty.The weight is appox 650lbs,& comes with the 1340 motor.not the 883,or 1200 motor.Also the frame is different.The FXR is one of the best frames Harley ever built.

RE: Newbie question - What is an FXR?
FXR is not from the Sportster family, it has the larger Evo or TwinCam engine and a larger chassis. FXR can be a model in itself or FXR can be the first three letters in another model ie. FXRP (police special), FXRT (had a fairing and bags), FXRS, ect. Back in the 80's H-D used less model letters than they do now, today most models have 5, 6 or 7 model letters.
Today models that start with FXD are from the Dyna family, FXST is from the Softail family, Sportstars start with XL, FLST is a softail with the touring front end, FL is touring such as an Ultra, VRS is VRod. I dont believe H-D has used the FXR prefix for a few years, but FX is still used.
Hope this helps you, I have been into this all my life and I have to admit it is a bit confusing when you have a life time perspective on it, and yea, I am gettin old, 44 years worth.

RE: Newbie question - What is an FXR?
F=big twin
X=sprot bike front end
R=Rubber mount.
The 1975 "FXR" that is listed for sale in the add that Thudmiester posted is not an FXR. They did not make rubber mounted bikes in 1975.
The FXR's had a unique frame to accomodate the rubber mounting, and they were some of the best bikes that HD ever made as far as being smooth, and good handling.
There were several models of FXR made, including an FXRT that had a full touring fairing, fiberglass saddlebags and trunk, and an FXRP police model.
Regards,
Bill
