Default What's the deal on non-DOT helmets?

I see some helmets that are non-DOT that look more protective than little DOT half helmets. Those Biltwell helmets look cool with the flake and are pretty pricey, then there are DOT helmets on ebay new for $25.

If I lived in a state that required helmets, I would go ahead and use DOT, assuming that gives you more protection. If I wanted to ride without a helmet, I would.

What do non-DOT helmets do for you?

It seems like there's something I'm missing.

Legally wearing a helmet that isnt DOT approved is the same as not wearing a helmet at all. Its basically a plastic hat.

I dont know how it would fair in an accident, but I sure wouldnt trust it. I do see a lot of vendors at shows selling DOT stickers that you can put on your non DOT helmet. I know a couple guys that wear those helmets to make the wife happy.

I bought a non-dot helmet a couple of months ago. I like the looks of it and it is a lot less bulky than my other two DOT helmets. Plus I've got loud pipes so I don't have to worry about whether or not it is DOT approved.

Although there are many that don't like having to wear a helmet, those that do wear them, do so with confidence that they are somewhat safer with a DOT helmet than without one.

I know in the Buffalo, NY area last year, NYS Troopers had bike checkpoints and were giving citations for non-DOT helmets.

I'm sure they were less interested in safety, more in generating revenue to fund the state and all its BS

I have an ACH (Army Combat Helmet) I'd love to wear. It will stop an AK-47 bullet but I can't wear it because it's not DOT approved. I know it's better than my half shell DOT POS I'm wearing now.

Stopping a bullet and absorbing an impact are two different things
