Default Cracked chrome -- U 2?

This past weekend I was doing the "once over" on the bike as I cleaned and polished it -- then found that on the chromed bracket on which the tour pack sits, the chrome is cracked and is flaking where the front vertical bolts secure the tour pack.

I had the dealer install the Kuryakyn tour pack extender and, from what I recall, the tech had to drill a couple holes to make it fit (so much for Kuryakyn's representation that it is a direct replacement of the OEM).

Question: Anyone else have this experience? Is this a sign of stress on the bracket itself -- with the cracked and flaking chrome being a sign of other things going on with the metal itself? Or is this just MOCO chrome gone bad?

Anyway, with the bike only being 1 year old, and the tour pack having been installed last November, I'm thinking someone other than me should be taking care of the remediation.

Thoughts? Observations? TIA....

Tod

If the cracking is at the same location as the mounting bolt where they had to drill/modify, I'd say it's due to stress from the drilling and/or from torquing down the mounting bolt. If the metal was distorted, it would be a good starting point for the chrome to flake, crack or peel. I wonder how much it would cost to have a plating company rechrome it?

Yeah, your local body shop can probably recommend a good re-chrome shop.

Bummer... Yeah, I'll probably have to pull it and have it repaired, as leaving it in this condition will only get worse, and then that monster known as "rust" sets it... Heck, I'm not through doing the first round of upgrades, and now I'm already repairing... That isn't how this is supposed to go...

As said before, if it is around the mod area, the drilling caused it. And this is common on many parts if that is the case. The dealer installed it so they are liable for the chrome failure if that is the case.

i've noticed that the last few years the moco chrome ain't what it used to be. I've already replaced a mirror and fender emblem on warranty because of peeling chrome.

I actually think that the piece you are referring to is part of the relocation kit and not from the moco. If you have a redress it is probably with kurykn
