TC88 to SE 103" conversion
Hi everyone.. I have an 05 Softail Deluxe and was flirting with the idea of converting my engine to SE 103". Looked to me at a glance as if the coversion (kit) would cost around 3k. However, the specs only show you picking up about 10 HP and about 10ft lbs torque, which, quite honestly concerns me about how much actual perceived increase that would actually be when in the saddle. I've never ridden a 103" so i'm completely oblivious to the difference between my TC88 with Stage 1 vs. the SE 103". It seems like quite a bit of money for the upgrade given the amount of the increase, which is why i am asking on opinions from those in the know on whether power increase is substantial and noticeable, and, justifiable given the cost. Also, any idea the amount of labor required by dealer to do this, and, would i still be able to keep my V&H Bigshot Staggereds on without problem. Thanks for your help. mb

I friend of mine did that upgrade to his TC 88 Night Train, plus he installed ported heads and a 51mm carb with a pro series hypercharger intake from Kuryakyn. Given the amount of money invested in that bike I have not asked him to let me take it for a spin... But let me tell you that the thing takes off on rage, damn it is fast! I believe he spent like 5k total doing that.
10 HP may sound a poor increase for a car, but let me tell you that it is really something under your *** in two wheels
Regards.

I can't quote numbers, but a buddy of mine has an 05 Road Glide with the 103" and six speed. Going down the freeway at about 75, he decided he was going to pass a car in a hurry and left me in the dust. When I caught up to him I asked him about it and he said he still probably had 1/2 the throttle left. I was impressed.

Don't take anything i say to the bank, double check my info but the charts i have seen with that HP didn't take into consideration exhaust or heads which adds alot more. They also come with mild cams. I also believe the 95 kit is a direct bolt on for an 88 but more is involved (material and money) to make an 88 a 103 (stroker kit of some type) The new 96's can go 103 as a bolt on because is has a longer stroke. The 07 new 103 upgrade kits are based on stock type exhaust and heads (saw that today on the HD website for 07's). The 103, like 95 kit is greatly enhanced with good heads. If you get the 103 without the exhaust and better heads all that potential power is choked off. I got tons more out of my 95 kit than 10 hp because of the heads and exhaust. Also, you'll need to get a SERT or something similar to program the upgrades. Just my 2 cents, i'm no tech or even close.

I had the 103 kit installed on my 05 EG classic before I took delivery. Keep in mind this is a 50 state, street legal kit. It is by no means getting the most available power out of a 103. The only thing I did in addition to the kit was to add SEII slipons and a SERT. after breakin and a dyno tune my 103 developed 94hp/103tq. The bike was fast and a joy to ride but If I was doing this over I would not purchase the "kit". Instead I would have worked with my builder and assembled the 103 with SE parts. Swaping the HTCC Heads for the rather poorly designed heads in the "kit". Forged pistons instead of the cast in the "kit". Better cams than the 253's in the "kit". This set up would easily produced 105/115 or better with out spending much more and be just as reliable as long as the compression is kept at 9.8 to 1 or less. All that said the most important factors are your builder and tuner. Don't just trust any dealer to do the job right. Spend some time asking others for the best builder in your area.

One thing I forgot. While the cases are apart, many would suggest that you have one of the crank bearings changed (I belive it's the left side). This apperently is considered a weak link when building up the TC88. I wasn't aware of this when mine was done, and I don't think any dealer is gonna offer this up and admit to the flaw.

Good advice!!
I have friends with the 103 Kits installed and they dyno over 100 HP. See Latus Harley, Portland Oregon. Go to service, ask Mike and select on line Dyno charts and you can see for yourself. All the various pipe options, cams, kits, etc and the resulting HP and TQ output. Beginning base line dyno runs and ending builds runs. Big difference over stock. All the Dyno charts are on line for every build they do! Check it out.
My friend has his Road King with a build by Mike at Latus and he claims he can lift the front wheel off the ground fairly easily.
I am happy with my Stage I performance.

I have a 05 Fatty 103 build. 108tq and 106hp. If you want power add a 2-1 pipe, I changed from loud drag pipes to V&H Pro pipe and gained 13hp and 5 ft lbs tq. You can go 95" build and get great numbers too for less money (no stroker kit$$), my 95" flhx gets 95tq and 90 hp (more than ample power for a bagger/tourer/run about). Remember you are spending a lot of money so dont get all the right guts and then put on a crap set of pipes. $3000 will get you a mild build but expect to pay more for serious power. The stock 103 build the moco sells in it screamin eagle bikes are dissapointing to me power-wise. I believe stock Hayabusa's make about 100 ft lbs of tq (BIG HP though) its fun to say my "dinasaur" air cooled v-twin make more tq than your super bike does.

It's cheaper to build a good 95" and from all that I hear they are more dependable. I love my 95 and would go that route again.

I spent around 3 grand with these guys. Mind you they did the short block and I put the rest together but they will do it all way less than HD will I have a 114cid engine that is breathing fire at 138hp and 140 flbs of torque and let me just say it is bitchin to be able to cruse at 70 just off of idle no ****
