Not illegal in Texas. The wavelength of the light a blue dot and red tail light combination emits falls in the red spectrum. So, if your state says you gotta have red lights on the back yonder, and doesn't specifically prohibit devices such as the blue dots, then they are legal. 'Course ya might need a good lawyer and a truck load of green stuff to win the case.

I'm not sure
If they are more visable or not. Minnesota changed their motorcycle regulation a couple of years ago to permit them on bikes. My wife has one in her tailight lense and it does look purplish in color. I've ridden behind her a lot and I can't decide if its any brighter or not.

Ever notice what color flashing light is on snow plows and emergency vehicles? Ambulances, as an example, have both blue and red flashing lights.
The blue light is more readily seen in inclement weather, such as fog or blowing snow. Lots of cars used to have them standard..just do a search for "blue dot tail lights."

It is a hot rod thing. I have run them on many street rods and have never been stopped for them but everybody likes street rods. Cops don't like HDs as much so I don't run them on the bikes.

It started back in my day as something that was cool and different. The problem with that is then everyone does it.
Everyone tries to be different but then they wind up looking just like all the others in a group from hippies to mc riders.

I have the blue dot in the center of my 99 Sportsters tailight. I guess my dad put it on there. Never rode behind it, so I don't know about the visibility.
