Default Harley-Davidson establishes subsidiary company in China

What does this mean for outsourcing and "made in China" labels on our bikes???

Jul 9, 2010 12:00:00 AM

Harley-Davidson, Inc. today announced the establishment of a subsidiary company in China - Harley-Davidson (Shanghai) Commercial and Trading Company Limited.

“The establishment of the China subsidiary company is a significant step in the deepening of Harley-Davidson’s long-term commitment in China,” said Steve Wasser, Managing Director, Harley-Davidson China. “This new structure will significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Harley-Davidson’s business operations at a time when the motorcycle company is expanding its presence in China.”

New dealerships are planned to open this year in Dalian, Xiamen, Wenzhou and Chengdu, bringing the total number of Harley-Davidson dealerships in China to eight.

“Our China subsidiary company is another significant milestone in the tremendous progress Harley-Davidson has made since we entered China in 2005. We expect it to allow us to increase our national sales and marketing capabilities; improve the logistics and supply of motorcycles and services to our dealerships; further develop the Harley-Davidson sales network throughout China; and provide better knowledge transfer from other markets into the China market,” said Wasser. “Our commitment is to bring to our Chinese customers and enthusiasts the exciting motorcycles, products and lifestyle that our Harley-Davidson owners experience in other Harley-Davidson markets around the world.”

Harley-Davidson is highly focused on expanding its presence and accelerating its growth in global markets as a major component of the Company’s business strategy. By 2014, the Company has said it expects to expand its dealer network outside the U.S. by 100-150 dealer points globally. The Company has also said it expects retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in non-U.S. markets to exceed 40 percent of total unit sales by 2014.

About Harley-Davidson in China
Harley-Davidson officially entered Mainland China in April 2005 when it established its representative office in Shanghai. At present, Harley-Davidson has a comprehensive sales and service network across four major cities in China – Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao and Hong Kong – and new dealerships are planned to open in 2010 in Dalian, Shenyang, Xiamen, Wenzhou and Chengdu. Now there are four H.O.G.Ň Chapters in Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao and Hong Kong. Through the authorized dealerships, Harley-Davidson provides its motorcycles and after sales services to customers in China.

There's a billion people over there. ONE BILLION. With a middle class that has emerged over the last 5-10 years.

Any company not capitalizing on that is stupid. There's money to be had there, and lots of it.

Exactly!

Just about any company you can name is trying to establish a presence in China.
Just getting a fraction of the market there, would be very good news.

Seriously, you should trademark that name before Corporate sees this. They'd have to pay you royalties to use it. If they sold a Billion Mandarin Duck pipes, you'd be set for life. Generations even.
