My riding buddy on his RK had the 96 SS in his bike. It was like a race motor. Our road trips at average speed just made him feel like he was not working it hard enough until we got on the highway and he tried to keep up to the Chief.
It is a sound motor just need to work it to make it pay. Ride around town and you might kill it early.
He also had foaming oil in the bag on some occasions. never figured that out yet.

A buddy has one in a custom, he's had trouble with it all summer, stripped ring gear and chewed up pinion gear. Busted the primary belt too.

He's the only one I know who has an S&S, and I have no idea why the problems. His mechanic wants to put a compression release on it.

I had a 96 " in a kit bike. Motor never gave any problems, the rest of the bike caused a lot of problems LOL It should have had comp releases. I did have it starting good after changing batteries and changing to larger battery cables. I would not hesitate to buy another.
