I switched to ATF. I posted up my results in the Dyna forum. The difference between ATF and the Harley transmission/primary fluid I WAS using is pretty drastic. Clutch engagement greatly improved, the first morning "clunk" vanished and because the clutch is functioning so much better, the tranny shifts allot smoother. Thats all I can say about that. I switched to ATF and I'm extremely happy. Unknown to me, a huge number of members already put ATF in the primary, but I'm always late to the game.

Post a picture of your primary so we can tell you what kind of oil to use. Or if that is too difficult you could go to the oil forum and read about primary oil until you're too old to ride.

I have quite a few Harley's, including a 1996 WideGlide, and for years I've used regular Rotella T 15W40 in the primaries...
Costs all of about $2.50 a quart, and works perfectly.
Also (a verified by the below email) Rotella T has a JASO-MA rating, which means it does not contain a high moly PPM count which could cause problems when used in wet clutch applications;
"We recently ran the JASO MA friction test on Rotella T with Triple Protection 15W-40, Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (CI-4) and our Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 CJ-4.
All three oils passed the wet clutch friction test. Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (CI-4) has more than 1.2% ash (JASO MA spec limit) so it can not be classified as JASO MA. However, Rotella T with Triple Protection 15W-40 and our soon to be introduced Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 CJ-4 do meet JASO MA.
