Has anyone done this and what tool did you use? I saw some done by a dremel tool but it was a rough look, like to get the look like on a zippo lighter but I'm probally going to have to get a professional for that?

 

Etching on what?

For glass, I'd use chemical etching. For metal, I'd use a stencil and either a sandblaster or I might try my air eraser.

 

I have etched glass with sandblaster . I used a small hand held blaster like the ones harbor Freight sells. Put on a stencil tape everything off around it and go over it lightly with the blaster. I know you can use acid etchers but I was always affraid it would bleed through the tape.

 

I'm thinking you mean on metal parts on your bike, like filigre or something like on an old rifle or shotgun? I have seen this done online before. They use special chisle-like tools and it looks like a pain in the *** and for the serious artist! I have attempted etching/engraving with an engraver and it is no where near as nice.

 

Gunsmiths know how. Check out their sites for advice.
They'll probably say "send it to a Master".

 

I know it's quicker and easier to hire a professional and it may come out looking perfect.
Do some research, educate yourself on the best tools and techniques. Find out what materials are easier to work with and which are difficult.
Get some good tools, start by practicing on some scrap then move on to little trinkets. You will know when your ready to try something valuable.
Who can put a price on the pride and character you get by doing it yourself.

 

Many hobby shops (michaels hobby lobby etc) sell kits specifically for etching.

 

BTW, Are you wanting to do etching or engraving? They are two different things.
