Default Homemade Tank Lift...

After trying to find a 2" tank lift kit for my 2008 fxdc, I ended up making my own. Used some 1/8" x 3/4" flat aluminum stock, and a piece of galvanized pipe. Cut 2 pieces from the flat aluminum stock that were 2 3/4" long with holes drilled 2" apart. Cut the galvanized pipe to 3" long to use as a spacer between the gas tank mounting tabs. I needed to buy a bolt ( to go through the spacer and the tank mounting tabs) , 4 chrome washers and 2 chrome acorn nuts. I have about $11 invested. I owe firedyna thanks for giving me info about removing the tank, and encouragement. I was reluctant to tackle this mod because I's never been mechanical inclined. Here are a couple of pics.

looks like ya did a great job. why did you lift it? just curious.. though it does look like it will be easier to clean the front valve cover..

if you don't mind i would like to make a suggestion about posting pics.. when posting such big pics. post them on top of one another instead of side by side. side by side it stretches the board and its hard to read what you posted. after the first pic [/img] tag just hit enter and it will put the next pic underneath..

Liked the look and it's easier to clean. Some say it runs cooler, but I can't verify that.

The pics were one above the other on my end, and not side by side. When I opened the thread to read your reply, they were on top of each other. I have tried to make them smaller, but had no luck.

Nice job! Always cool to make your own part.

Hard to believe you couldn't find one though. A guy named jackyl makes them and they're talked about all the time in the Dyna Forum. Just need to do a search. Also, can find them on google, ebay...

Let me rephrase it, I could find them, I just didn't like the price.

Nice job (and bike). That's kicking it up a notch with the pipe spacer. Really creative and structurally sound. Most guys I've seen just just two bolts (one for each side of the tank).

Did you also post it to HDTalking? Those guys might be interested in seeing it.

You can pick up PaintShop Pro for $24 at Amazon. It will resize your photos to whatever you want.

lifting the tank the way you did, gives your bike much nicer flowing lines. i like it, looks sharp, and it opens up the engine area a little bit for some added bling.

Have since revised the tank lift. Instead of the galvanized pipe spacer, is used aluminum tubing, so there will be no rust. I also used all-thread instead of bolts so I would have the chrome acorn nuts on both sides instead of just the left side.
