Harley got scared that Buell was going to be successful when they put that new motor in and shut them down. That whole new fangled technology thing was just too much for them to handle.

But what about top end? What will an old 1200cc Buell do compared to a vrod? I know my 1000cc Honda RC51 would do at least 150

Just know from my own experience, I was challenged by a guy on a VRod; I was on my 2000 Buell Lightning. He got his *** spanked. To be fair, I gave him another chance, this time with my buddy riding, who'd never ridden my Buell before; same result.

Might want to find out what bikes the OP is talking about...in NHRA drag racing both V-rods and Buells are present...and the V-rods tend to win more often than not. Qualifying results from the Gator Nationals two weeks ago:

Psn Rider Vehicle ET Speed
1. Hector Arana Lucas Oil Buell 6.777$ 196.10
2. Eddie Krawiec Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines 6.788 199.26^
3. Andrew Hines Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines 6.826 198.73
4. Karen Stoffer Geico Suzuki 6.833 198.00
5. Matt Smith Al-Anabi Racing Buell 6.872 194.32
6. LE Tonglet Nitrofish Suzuki 6.880 196.27
7. Gerald Savoie SAF & Motorcycles Specalities 6.886 193.68
8. Shawn Gann Gann Speed Buell 6.895 189.95
9. David Hope VRoom Racing Buell 6.900 194.07
10. Mike Berry Varoom/ LAT Racing Oil Buell 6.910 192.33
11. Jim Underdahl Suzuki Extended Protection Suz 6.918 196.87
12. Angie Smith Coffman Tank Trucks Buell 6.926 190.59
13. Michael Ray GottSpeed/Star Racing Buell 6.933 187.52
14. Steve Johnson Steve Johnson Racing Suzuki 6.940 194.66
15. Katie Sullivan Sullivan Family Racing Suzuki 6.990 191.97
16. Joe DeSantis Team Joey D Suzuki 7.014 190.97

Final round:

(W) Eddie Krawiec (Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hine 0.053 6.847 197.08
(L) Karen Stoffer (Geico Suzuki) -0.002(R) 6.949 193.27

So you had one Buell then the only two V-Rods in the whole competition qualify 1, 2, 3. And all a lot faster than 10 seconds.

And if you want to just talk "factory" bikes...then look at the VRXSE Screamin' Eagle Destroyer. That is also under 10 seconds. Granted not a street bike but the OP didn't specify that.

To which I say, OP...just what exactly are you looking for? I'm assuming you're talking for street use. The V-rod is more of a "power cruiser" while the hot Buells are classic Sportbike all the way. Generally, the V-Rod will be more comfortable (note I said "more"...meaning "relative to") than your standard Sportbike seating position but will less capable in the turns and, depending on which Buell you're talking about, slower in straight line acceleration.

Exactly. If you care about performance, my ZX10's will do 10 sec 1/4 mile all day. Or if that's not enough and you want something bigger in size, the new ZX14 does 9's and below 9 with a sprocket change.

Or if you like the chromed out look of the Vrod (which is a very nice looking bike), the Vmax, Diavel, or other power cruisers will blow the Vrod out of the water on performance.

My 08 Buell Ulysses with the 1203 cc converted Sportster motor will match my 12 Night Rod Special in the 1/4 and almost top end.

The 106HP Buell is about 100 lbs lighter than the 125HP Night Rod and more low end torque for off the line. A group in Sweden had a U tube video of a Ulysses with studded tires on a frozen lake going 137 mph on radar. It probably would do better on pavement. The Night Rod is about 10 mph faster.

Both bikes can be bested by a 600 cc four cylinder sport bike. But, who gives a crap. The sport bike can't do the Alaskan Highway like the Ulysses and and the V-Rod is still a cruiser and not a sport bike. Cruising is cool.

Anyone who has never ridden the air cooled Buell would be surprised at it's over all performance. Eric had the power curve and gearing spot on through the rpm range. Of any of the bikes that I have had none are as matched with the gearing and power output that the Buell is. HD XL 1200 is 65 HP at the crank stock. The Buell version is 106HP at the crank stock. The HD XR1200 which HD robbed the Buell parts bin only put out 90HP stock as HD did not engineer the air inflow as well as Buell did.

Buell now has a 1190 water cooled twin that is competitive with the sport bikes. Soon there will be a street legal version and it will be followed by other street bikes as the non compete clause comes to an end. Long live Buell!
